During the week, we here at Balls.ie challenged our readers to vote for the greatest name in football and although many votes were cast, there was one clear victor.
Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was the runaway winner of the poll with 208 votes at the time of writing. Zinedine Zidane came second with 139 votes. The rest of the top five was made up of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Hakin Yakin and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Here's a video of the former Celtic man knocking in a few goals for the Bhoys for old time's sake:
According to the Independent, the origin of his rather long winded name came about when two families intermarried and because both families names carried equal social weight both were incorporated into one surname. 'Of' in Dutch translates as 'or', so Jan's name really means is 'Jan Vennegoor or Hesselink'.
Honourable mentions go to the following players who missed the cut for this poll. Kudos to the good folks on Facebook and Twitter for writing in the following names:
Papa Bouba Diop - Should've made the cut.
Bobo Balde - Can feel aggrieved not to have made the list.
Celestine Babayaro - It was a toss-up between him and Bakayoko.
Pierre Van Hooijdonk - Very fun name to say, to be fair.
Bosko Balaban - The most eastern European name ever.
Danny Invincible - Lot of calls for this one.
Kiki Musampa - Don't know how I had the heart to leave Kiki out.
Esteban Cambiasso - World class name.
Ricky Van Wolsfswinkel - Could've have won the whole damn thing if I'd remember the erstwhile Norwich striker.
Santiago Canizares - Valencia goalkeeper or Bond villain?
Wang Dong - I specifically asked for no joke names!
