The League of Ireland kicked back into action on Friday night and champions Dundalk started where they left off last season with a 2-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers in front of well over four and a half thousand fans at Oriel Park. Robbie Benson put the home side ahead after 32 minutes before Ciaran Kilduff headed in another for the Lilywhites a few minutes into the second half. An intense game promised even more drama after Graham Burke pulled one back for Rovers in the 71st minute. But he then ruined that goal with a moment of madness just three minutes later.
Burke initially made the challenge on Jamie McGrath before bizarrely - and dangerously - following through on the ball while McGrath lay on the ground. A very odd decision, even in the heat of the moment, and one that would cost his team dearly.
