Goalkeepers Up For Corners: A Tribute To Football's Great 'Kitchen Sink' Moment

Goalkeepers scoring from corners is one of the bizarre and joyous rare gifts that football endows upon us from time to time. We decided to take a look at some of the best.

On Wednesday night, Oscarine Masuluke - the goalkeeper for Baroka FC in South Africa - scored a goal that can only be described as a worldie. It was an outrageous effort from near the edge of the box that quickly found itself catapulted around the internet with as much velocity as the strike itself.

There's something fairly hilarious about a goalkeeper scoring a goal, but almost better is the reaction from team-mates and often the goalie themselves whenever the ball goes in - the sheer audacity of it all is usually etched on their faces.

We decided to put together a list of some of the best 'Keeper up for a corner' goals that are out there at the moment. Let us know if we've left any out.

Peter Schmeichel, Aston Villa v Everton 2001

Scandalously, Everton left the prolific Dane unmarked in the area in this 'Premiership' clash which Villa went on to lose 3-2. He punished their carelessness with a thundering volly.

Brad Friedel, Charlton v Blackburn Rovers, 2004

Incredibly, Blackburn actually went on to lose this game 3-2. But a brilliantly sharp finish from Friedel towards the end of normal time against Charlton briefly put them on level terms.

Andres Palop, Sevilla v Shakhtar Donetsk

Palop's goal came in the 2007 Europa League game that Sevilla ended up winning 3-2 (5-4 on aggregate). The commentators here found it absolutely hilarious. Brilliant stuff.

Peter Schmeichel, Manchester United v Rotor Volgograd, 1995

Big Pete came up with the goods in this UEFA cup clash at Old Trafford that finished 2-2. He couldn't stop United being knocked out of the competition on away goals, however.

Incidentally, the Rotor manager said after the game:

Our players were surprised. That sort of thing doesn't happen often in Russia.

It's not too frequent over in this part of the world, either. It clearly runs in the family, though - Schmeichel's son Kasper scored a header two and a half years ago against Yeovil.

Jens Lehmann, Dortmund v Schalke 04, 1997

It's the dying moments of the 'Revierderby' between Borussia Dortmund and his club Schalke 04 and Lehmann - who was certainly one of the maddest netminders around, and that's saying something - uses all his poacher's instincts to nod an equalizer in the last minute of the game.

Frank Rost, Werder Bremen v Rostock 2002

This was the first of two goals in an incredible comeback for Bremen where they came through to win 4-3.

Peter Schmeichel's spectacular disallowed goal v Wimbledon, 1997

The 'Crazy Gang' take on United and dump them out of the FA Cup but it is United who provide the madness through the prism of the usual suspect. His goal was unfortunately disallowed for offside but you have to admire the flexibility and sheer audacity of Schmeichel. As Andy Gray says in commentary, "Trevor Sinclair, eat your heart out!"

Jimmy Glass, Carlisle v 1999

It's the story behind this goal that is better than the goal itself. Jimmy Glass, who only ever played three games for Carlisle in his career, scores the goal against Plymouth that prevents them from being relegated from the Football League.

Craig Samson, Kilmarnock v Dundee 2014

It's all very well when the ball hits the net and the goalkeeper can enjoy all the glory - but he has to make sure he gets back into his net at the other end if things go pear-shaped. This is an example of what can go wrong when a goalkeeper misses his opportunity and fails to exhibit Davy Fitz-like pace to get back up the other end. Samson's team lost 3-1.
