Glenn Whelan will not be joining his Aston Villa teammates in the Premier League next season.
It was announced on Saturday afternoon that the 35-year-old is one of eight players who have been released by the club.
The other are Mile Jedinak, Alan Hutton, Tommy Elphick, Albert Adomah, Ritchie De Laet, Mark Bunn and Micah Richards.
Whelan joined Villa on a two-year contract in the summer of 2017 from Stoke in a deal worth £1 million.
In the Championship this season, he made 36 appearances in all, 24 of those being starts. He was an unused substitute as Villa won promotion to the Premier League on Monday when they beat Derby in the playoff final.
Whelan also made a surprise return to the Ireland squad back in March when he was called up by Mick McCarthy. He went on to start the Euro 2020 qualifier win against Georgia.
