A Glenn Whelan goal isn't a common sight, so when he does hit the net he wants to keep his name on the scoresheet - even if it's at the wrong end...
It's been a while since Glenn Whelan scored a goal. 214 games, in fact. And to be fair to the man we affectionately refer to as 'Glenjamin', scoring isn't his job. His job is mainly to do with preventing them going in at the other end and covering tracks for the more attack-minded midfielders in his teams - be it with Ireland or with Stoke.
And, as we have highlighted previously, he has long since mastered the craft of pointing, which is (as Johnny Giles will doubtless tell you) a true sign of a top, top player.

But no player who has gone so long without hitting the net is going to refuse the chance to claim for a goal. Even if the ball happens to land in the wrong net.
It's a rare treat getting to hear Glenjamin interviewed. But if every interview he does produces such brilliant moments of ironic self-deprecation then we want more of them. In a manner reminiscent of the wind-up merchant at school, Whelan makes clear his unwillingness to let Antonio of West Ham be credited with the goal - and rightfully so. Whelan had skillfully, if unintentionally, diverted the ball into the net of his own accord.

What made it all the more hilarious was Antonio's clear annoyance at being denied the credit for Whelo's screamer.
I can't believe they have the cheek not to give me the goal! Doesn't make sense to me 🙈🙈@WestHamUtd @premierleague

Glenjamin Whelan - the only thing sharper than his eye for a pass is his cutting wit.
