Last month, Rangers inability to crack Celtic's dynasty in the Scottish Premier League saw them turn to Former England and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard. Gerrard immediately declared his intention to 'build on the many successes this club has achieved.' A month later that has proved somewhat difficult.

Early reports suggested Gerrard had a clear idea of the players he wanted to lure to Glasgow. Former team-mate Martin Skrtel was first on the list and rumoured to be keen, but that deal is now dead as his agent confirmed the cut in wages was too much to accept.

Per the Times, Rangers then looked towards Brighton defender Connor Goldston, but cannot come close to matching his £3 million transfer fee. Gerrard's inability to get deals over the line may have already led to some 'early tension' between the Rangers boss and the board. This week former Ibrox captain Lee McCulloch publicly called on the board to back Gerrard in terms of providing money.

Having also targeted Jermaine Defoe and Dominic Solanke, Rangers financial restrictions saw Gerrard confirm signings of 36-year-old goalkeeper Allan McGregor and 29-year-old free agent Scott Arfield.

It all comes while Rangers chairman Dave King, who introduced Steven Gerrard on 4 May, has engaged in a very public spat with the SPFL.

He only officially started the job two days ago, but if the reality wasn't already obvious to the 38-year-old, Gerrard has a huge task on his hands to bridge the gap between the Glasgow rivals.
