The head of Germany's football association (DFB) Wolfgang Niersbach has today admitted that the trophy which was presented to the victorious German players, following their 1-0 win after extra time in the World Cup final against Argentina, did not survive the celebrations without a blemish.
Neirsback was quoted in Die Welt as saying:
At one point, a small piece of our World Cup trophy was chipped off, but do not worry! We have specialists on the case who can fix it.
What is strange about the incident is that nobody has been able to pinpoint when, or more importantly who, is the clumsy so and so responsible for chipping the iconic trophy, and in a situation most boys will have faced in primary school, the squad have kept quiet under "investigation".
We have investigated persistently who it was that damaged the trophy, but the investigation was concluded without a result.
No rats in the German squad then. We'll keep you up to date with more information on this utterly compelling story as we receive it.
