On Tuesday, Dundee United released a statement saying that Gavin Gunning had left the club by mutual consent.
The former Ireland U21 player had just six weeks left on his contract with the club.
Gavin Gunning has left Dundee United by mutual consent. This is a private matter and the Club will not make any further comment.
The Dubliner's departure from Tannadice came just four days after he exhibited some strange behaviour during Dundee United's game against Inverness.
On Saturday, United lost 2-0 at home. During the game, Gunning picked up the ball and walked off the pitch. He then stepped back over the white line to receive treatment for an injury.
Manager Mixu Paatelainen told BBC Scotland that Gunning did so because he was injured and was unable to kick the ball out of play. He also stated that the reason for his departure was unrelated to the incident.
That had nothing to do with it. There haven't been any fall-outs here.
He was injured - he got a knock on his upper shin area - and he couldn't carry on.
He couldn't kick the ball out. That's why he picked the ball up and wanted the game stopped.
It was quite a bizarre moment because nobody knew what happened there.
He did indicate before that he had a problem, but obviously the game was rolling. If he went down, Caley Thistle might have had a dangerous attack on our goal.
However, according to the Daily Record, there could be a little bit more to the story. They claim Gunning was released because of his refusal to issue a 'heartfelt apology' for his behaviour and that the release might not have been as mutual as the club's statement asserted.
The Record say that the 25-year-old has consulted with his agent and is refusing to quit the club with immediate effect.
