The Merseyside derby is often decided by the finest of margins, meaning you don't often get away with mistakes such as this one.

While Liverpool have been in dire form since the turn of the years, Everton always knew they would have to avoid schoolboy errors during a visit to Anfield.

Sean Dyche was always going to set his team up to limit opportunities for Jurgen Klopp's side in this game. However, many of the chances the home side did create came on the back of Everton missteps at the back.

The opening goal of the game was a prime example.

Gary Neville hammers Coleman & Pickford over Liverpool goal

Everton had managed to see the first 35 minutes of the game through without conceding, although Liverpool had looked dangerous for much of the opening half.

The visitors actually then came close to take the lead from a corner, only for James Tarkowski's header to hit the post. What followed was a brilliant counterattack goal from the hosts, although they were given a helping hand by their opponents.

The first mistake came from Seamus Coleman, who allowed Darwin Nunez to launch the attack by mistiming his tackle on the edge of the Liverpool box. Next came an absolute howler from Jordan Pickford, who completely misread the flight of the cross to allow Mohamed Salah to score into an empty net.

The mistake from Pickford was particularly poor.

Speaking on Sky Sports at halftime, Gary Neville heavly criticised both players for their roles in conceding the goal.

At the edge of the box, if you look at Coleman, once you go there you can't stop, you've got to go and win it, take everything and give a foul away.

He jumps. Your job is to delay the counterattack, he quickens the attack up. We know how good Liverpool are on the counterattack, they've been like that for years...

Pickford's positioning is not interesting, it's just bad. I have no idea what he's doing.

It's almost as if he thinks the ball isn't going to Salah at all and is going to the back post. He makes a real mess of it.

It's an open goal and he makes it very easy for Mo Salah.

You can't afford to defend like that in a derby game at Anfield, regardless of what sort of form Liverpool are in.

As for Jordan Pickford, you always get the sense that he has this type of mistake in him.
