Maurizio Sarri is currently trying to navigate choppy waters at the helm of Chelsea football club and he seems content to do it without English defender Gary Cahill.
Cahill has been on the peripheral figure at the club this season, with Sarri preferring David Luiz and Antonio Rüdiger at the heart of his defence. The 33-year-old was linked with a move to Fulham during the transfer window but it never transpired.
Now, various reports have started to emerge detailing the extent of Cahill's alienation. The Telegraph have reported that Cahill and Sarri do not have a speaking relationship and that the Englishman was shocked when he was not even involved in their Europa League game last week. Andreas Christensen started alongside Luiz during their 2-1 win.
A former team-mate is quoted as saying Cahill has been made to feel like a “ghost.”
Elsewhere, the Sun have also reported that fellow Chelsea players are "stunned" at the treatment of the experienced defender.
when asked about Cahill by ESPN last month, Sarri explained he did not suit their style of play.
"Every match I have to choose. For me it is not [possible] to have him on the bench. Maybe he is the best [of our defenders] in the box, but our defenders may play 100 or 110 balls in a match so I need defenders [to play] very technically."
As for Sarri, his task is not set to get any easier. Next up for Chelsea is a FA Cup clash with Manchester United on Monday, with Malmo, Manchester City and Spurs coming after that.
