Louis Van Gaal had promised that there could be a surprise for Manchester United to come in this transfer window. Naturally, everyone and their dog has been trying to figure out who that surprise is could be.
The Irish Independent are reporting that it could be long term target - Gareth Bale. United have tried to sign Bale on two previous occasions, and now a fee has been set if they want to add him to their squad.
Bale hasn't settled all that well in Spain after moving from Spurs for £85 million two years ago. Real Madrid want their investment back, and then some, for Bale - and have told United that they have to part with €140 million if Bale is to join Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlein, Depay and Darmian. It's also highly likely that any deal for Bale will include David de Gea moving back to the Spanish capital.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is adamant that Bale is going nowhere, but the Irish Independent says that the clubs have remained in contact over a possible switch.
With interest remaining in Sergio Romero and Nicolas Otamendi for United, who have already spent around £75 million, another outlay of that magnitude would show they mean business.
