Riots erupted in Port Said in Egypt yesterday after a court sentenced 21 people to death on charges related to the clashes between Al Ahly of Cairo and the local side Al Masry on the 1st of February last year. 74 people died during the violence. After the sentences were read out live on television, Al Masry fans attacked the main jail and cut off all access to the city. At least 30 people have been killed mostly from gunfire while at least 300 have been injured. The Egyptian army has deployed armoured personal carriers to combat the violence. The sentences can be appealed and must also be ratified by Egypt's senior religious authority; the Grand Mufti.
