Frank Lampard has spoken of the moment he knew it was time to retire from international football. In an interview with the Sun, the midfielder mentioned a conversation with 19-year-old Manchester United fullback Luke Shaw, which was enough to convince Lampard that he was no longer part of the current generation of young professionals.
He said:
I was having a chat with Luke Shaw and I mentioned Tony Adams and he didn’t seem to know who I was talking about,
I said: “Are you winding me up?” And he said: “Who did he play for?” I knew then then it was time to retire.
Unless you're genuinely too young to have heard of the former hellraiser, England captain and legendary Arsenal centre back, Shaw's lack of basic footballing knowledge should make you feel very old indeed. Adams retired from football in 2002 when Shaw was just 7 years old, but one would have expected him to have known about such a giant of the English game.
If you're still a bit ropey from last night and were feeling decrepit enough without having to learn such a depressing fact, I really am sorry.
