BBC viewers were left reeling last night after Gary Lineker produced a savage roast of Frank Lampard in the build up to the game between Germany and Hungary in the second match-day of Euro 2024.

After a brilliant start to their home tournament against Scotland last Friday, the hosts secured a 2-0 win against Hungary thanks to goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gündogan in the 22nd and 67th minute respectively.

Lineker and Lampard were joined on the BBC panel by former Arsenal and England right-back Alex Scott and current Brentford manager Thomas Frank. The Berlin studio itself overlooks the historic Brandenberg Gate, which is the site of the main fan zone in the city.

Frank Lampard Gobsmacked By Gary Lineker's Subtle Balding Dig In BBC Studio

Prior to the game between Germany and Hungary, the BBC panel were discussing the incredible show of support the German fans have given their team. The Scottish fans have also put on quite a show of support for their side, and have received international praise particularly for their rendition of 'Flower of Scotland' in last night's match against Switzerland.

The backdrop of the BBC studio is the Brandenberg Gate, on which an enormous screen has been erected for fans to watch the matches live. Gary Lineker said he wished to be able to see the fans during the games, leading to this hilarious exchange:

Gary Lineker: "I wish they'd take that screen down, then we'd see all the punters, but if they took the screen down they wouldn't be able to watch the game."

Frank Lampard: “The back of our heads... who wouldn't turn up for that?”

Lineker then produced a hilarious one-line roast of Frank Lampard to stun the former Chelsea midfielder into silence,

"No-one wants to see the back of your head these days do they frank? That's for sure!"

Lampard was left stunned, slowly coming to the realisation that Lineker had in fact made a balding dig. What followed was hilarious, as Lampard's face dropped instantly. It was pure football heritage from the former Chelsea midfielder and two-time manager, who developed a reputation for his comedic transitions between jokes and serious matters in his press conference.

With Lampard still processing the subtle dig from Lineker, the latter continued with the show as normal, putting a question to Alex Scott about whether or not pundits wrote Germany off from being contenders for Euro 2024 prior to the tournament.

Gary Lineker Responds To Viral Balding Dig in BBC Studio

Speaking on his podcast, The Rest is Football, with fellow pundit Micah Richards, Gary Lineker responded to the clip that went viral last night. When describing what happened to Richards on the podcast, Lineker starting by saying, "I got myself in a bit of a pickle... with Frank Lampard", and was asked to expand by Richards.

Lineker insisted that his balding dig was "actually about all of us [on the BBC panel]". I think more specifically it was meant for himself and Lampard just, considering the other two pundits were Alex Scott, who very much has a full head of hair, and Thomas Frank, whose luscious locks show no signs of thinning.

Lineker continued, "Obviously Frank's slightly thinning, and I'm slightly thinning in my old age a little bit, and I actually meant it about everyone, but when it came out it came out a bit wrong."

"You know Frank does that thing where he smiles, and then he suddenly doesn't smile. Frank's great fun he won't mind, but I must admit when I got back to the hotel, I saw it on social media I went

'Oh you f*cking idiot', and I feel really bad."

Lineker hasn't seen Frank Lampard since seeing the clip go viral, but says he will apologise to the former Chelsea midfielder and manager when he next sees him, as the dig "wasn't deliberate."

He closes by playing into the funny side of the clip, stating, "Those things happen in Live TV, that's like TV, it's funny !"
