There was a time in the mid-2000s when, if your weekend Premier League bet lost because of a late Chelsea goal, you automatically assumed it was a Frank Lampard shot which went in off an opponent's arse. There was a calming inevitability about it.
Chelsea frequently scored late goals and it felt like Lampard was usually responsible for them.
When a volley is scored from the edge of the box after a corner, it's Scholes-esque. A volley from an impossible angle is van Basten-esque. Some crazy dribbling and juggling followed by a top corner strike is Le Tissier-esque.
Just like they are the standard bearer for those types of goal, Frank Lampard is the standard bearer for the late lucky goal.
In MLS on Sunday night, Lampard continued his recent hot streak for New York City FC.

It was a goal for real fortune - not least for the two Montreal players colliding in the build up. After taking possession just inside the box, Lampard miscontrolled the ball. It would still hit the back of the net after the defender's attempt to challenge Lampard.
