With the Euro 2016 draw just two days away, Karim Benzema has been suspended indefinitely by the French national team for his alleged role in the blackmailing of teammate Mathieu Valbuena. Benzema was arrested by French police last month after it was alleged he conspired in an attempt to extort money from Valbuena by acting as an intermediary between his teammate and those who claimed to hold a sex-tape featuring Valbuena. Benzema has denied the charges. Both Benzema and Valbuena were omitted from the French squad for the subsequent friendlies against Germany and England.
Benzema has now been banned by the French Football Federation until the case is resolved. Benzema will likely miss the friendly internationals scheduled for March and his participation at Euro 2016 is now in serious jeopardy, as Didier Deschamps is due to name his squad for the tournament in May.
