Alvarez joined Sligo in 2005 and helped them win the First Division that season. He was an incredibly popular player, and his loss will be felt sorely in North West Connacht.
Sligo will mark his death at their next game after the mid-season break against Longford Town.
Sean Connor, manager of Sligo who brought Alvarez to Ireland said:
I got to know Carlos when I was coaching in America. I thought he would make an impact and offer something to the league and he did, he scored some vital goals for us. He was really well-liked. He was larger than life, charasmatic, a popular figure and today's news is incredibly sad.
We have many happy memories of Carlos from our 2005 FD title win. May he rest in peace. pic.twitter.com/UjFVTec8CP
