Former Sligo Rovers striker Carlos Alvarez has lost his long battle with serious illness last night. The Bolivian striker died aged 31 in his home country. He is survived by his wife Claudia, son Abele, and a daughter from a relationship in Ireland, Kiara.

Alvarez joined Sligo in 2005 and helped them win the First Division that season. He was an incredibly popular player, and his loss will be felt sorely in North West Connacht.

Sligo will mark his death at their next game after the mid-season break against Longford Town.

I got to know Carlos when I was coaching in America. I thought he would make an impact and offer something to the league and he did, he scored some vital goals for us. He was really well-liked. He was larger than life, charasmatic, a popular figure and today's news is incredibly sad.
