Former Manchester United forward Guiseppe Rossi is set to face trial for after testing positive for banned substance dorzolamyde following a Serie A clash between Genoa and Beneveto last May.
Rossi, who made 14 appearances for the Red Devils between 2004 and 2007, could face a year out of the game if found guilty by Italy's anti-doping agency, Nado Italia.
Dorzolamyde is a substance usually found in anti-glaucoma medication, but according to Gazetta dello Sport Rossi has denied ever taking eye drops. Dorzolamyde is permitted in certain circumstances, where special dispensation is obtained, but this does not appear to be the case with Rossi.
Rossi, who is now free agent after being released by Genoa, will stand trial on October 1st.
The striker, who has 30 caps for the Italian national side, and was once touted as the next big thing at Old Trafford but injuries hampered his career, with the forward becoming something of a journeyman in the latter stages of his playing days.
Rossi will be fondly remembered at Villarreal however, with the Italian notching 82 goals in 192 appearances for the Yellow Submarine.
