Eddie Van Boxtel, formerly of several League of Ireland clubs including Dundalk, where he won the league in 1995, Galway United and Bray Wanderers, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for possession of cannabis worth some €3.5m according to RTÉ News.
The Dutchman was initially apprehended in February 2008 along with three others in Kill, Co. Kildare. He never showed to court for his inital hearing in July 2008 and a warrant was then executed for his arrest, reported The Indo last year.
Van Boxtel then managed to evade Garda capture for some time, finally being arrested early last year, some six years after the warrant was issued. He was understandably refused bail and spent the majority of 2014 in custody.
Mountjoy famously has a prison team, coached by Boh's volunteers which competes with other local sides and Boh's U19s so he may not be too long waiting for his next game.
