With his prospects of breaking into Ireland's national set up looking slim, one of our few players plying their trade beyond Britain is considering the possibility of defecting ... sort of.
Playing in goals for the Norwegian side Kristiansund BK, Seán McDermott has admitted in an interview with The Sun that "if Ireland never call and Norway do, then I have to consider it at least."
Having represented Ireland at underage level, McDermott was actually born in Norway - his father is from Donegal.
A part of Arsenal's youth set up for three years, a fruitless loan spell at Leeds United resulted in McDermott returning to Norway in 2012, where he has played there ever since.
With Darren Randolph, Rob Elliot, Colin Doyle and Keiren Westwood all viably ahead of McDermott in terms of squad selection, solid performances in Norway's top league has had media outlets there questioning whether he would consider the option of representing Norway instead:
Norway haven't contacted me directly but the media have been asking questions. I've had a good season, so they're asking if I want to play for Norway.
Yet, despite the chance of representing his country of birth, the 24 year old knows what side he would rather break into:
[Ireland] probably have some reason for not calling on me. But there is nothing more I can really do than keep my head down and keep trying to develop.
It'd be an honour to get picked.
