In what has been a poor season for Manchester United, one thing has become increasingly clear: Harry Maguire is not good enough to anchor a team with ambitions of winning the biggest prizes in club football.

The Englishman has had an up and down time at Old Trafford since signing in the summer of 2019, although this season his form has really dropped off a cliff. It seems that hardly a game goes by where doesn't commit at least one horrific mistake.

The £80million spent to sign him from Leicester City looks increasingly like one of the worst deals in Premier League history, with the decision to then hand him the captain's armband perhaps even more puzzling.

At the time, Maguire was viewed as the missing piece at United, someone who could perhaps replicate the impact that Virgil van Dijk had at Liverpool. The reality has been far different. In fact, one of his former teammates believes that the defender is well out of his depth at the club.

Former Hull City man says Harry Maguire out of his depth at Man United

Speaking on beIN Sports, former Hull city winger Ahmed Elmohamady said that Maguire is nowhere near the level required to be Manchester United captain.

Harry was with me in Hull City and, in my opinion, he doesn’t have the level to be the Manchester United captain.

Man United need a player with a strong personality and I hope that the next manager will give the captaincy to Ronaldo if he stays. Ronaldo can handle this responsibility and pressure; however, Maguire can’t handle this pressure.

So I think that the pressure he has by wearing the captain’s armband is affecting his performances. Maguire performed really well with Leicester, a team that competes to be in the top six of the Premier League and maybe this is his level.

He doesn’t have the level to play for the biggest team in the history of England.

The next Manchester United manager will have a big rebuilding job on his hands, with mending the issues at the back likely to be one of their main focuses.

It is highly likely that Harry Maguire could be a casualty of that process. At the very least, he surely can no longer be a guaranteed started in the side.
