Kerry Dixon, the ex Chelsea and England striker, was today jailed for nine months following an assault upon a man who aggravated him by calling him "fatso".
The incident occured in a pub in Bedfordshire in May 2014, where CCTV footage showed Mr Dixon knock the victim off a barstool and continued to punching him upon the floor.
Judge Barbara Mensah acknowledged that Mr. Dixon had showed "genuine remorse" for the attack, but also remarked that the incident was "shocking and sickening to watch", describing the violence as "disproportionate, unnecessary and completely over the top".
Mr Dixon's barrister Mark Wyeth QC spoke outside the court after the sentencing to state that Chelsea FC and the PFA were "very supportive" of his client.
Dixon scored 147 goals for Chelsea, and also played for Southampton, Luton, Milwall and Doncaster Rovers. He scored four goals in eight appearances for4 England.
