Amazon's fly-on-the-walls-of-Man-City documentary launches this week, and another English club are taking inspiration from the series.
According to the Daily Mail, ever since appointing Barton, the club have been filming behind the scenes and they have instructed their manager to wear a microphone. Barton has done so for the majority of his time in charge thus far, aside from, unfortunately, during matches.
Per the Mail, the show have already spliced together a pilot episode and shown it to Amazon, Netflix, and the BBC. They believe that the documentary series could fetch a million pounds if it were sold to terrestrial television.
Whether we ever see the documentary is unclear, but the fact that the club are so eager to produce it is instructive of the changing nature of football clubs. When appointed to the League One club, Barton had no managerial experience whatsoever. There was much caviling at the time that more experienced and qualified coaches were denied an opportunity, but evidently, Fleetwood were willing to accept the risks of appointing a novice for the potential reward of his notoriety selling a piece of content.
Manchester United have been widely derided for describing themselves as the "world's biggest TV show", but they are not the only club in England placing content creation high on their list of priorities.
