Every year FIFA incorporates new features into the game and each of these features often take time to get used to and take advantage of. Here is our list of FIFA20 tips and tricks that will help you master these new additions to the game and use them to your advantage during gameplay.

Dribbling

There has been a massive emphasis placed on 1v1 situations in FIFA 20 as both defending and dribbling have been improved. A way to get around this improvement in defending is taking advantage of the new mechanic called strafe dribbling.

Holding down L1/LB allows you to move around and have the ball under close control and if you hold down R1/RB it locks you into the direction that your player is facing. Strafe dribbling can be particularly effective when you drag the ball backward and this could lure the defender out of position which would create space to play a pass, take a shot or allow one of your players to make a run.

Defending

Defending has also been completely overhauled as players can no longer rely on the AI to get you out of trouble when at the back. Holding L1/L2 and jockeying allows your defender to stand the attacking player up while staying goal-side without diving in. It gives you the opportunity to tackle or intercept if the attacking player takes a heavy touch or plays a bad pass. This will help your team to keep their defensive shape.

Timed Finishing

Timed finishing has been brought back in FIFA 20 and has been retouched and rebalanced which has made it more difficult to pull off. After powering up a shot, you will need to press O/B at the right time before the player actually takes the shot. This will cause you to take more consistent and accurate shots and increase your chances of scoring. This could be a huge advantage when taking shots from distance so it would be worth practicing timed finishing.

Set-pieces and Penalties

Recommended

The mechanics for set-pieces and penalties have been completely changed for FIFA 20. With free-kicks, the left analogue stick is now used to aim while the right stick is used to add spin. Rotating the right-stick in different ways adds different types of spin to the shot such as dip, curve or knuckleball. Familiarity with these types of spin will be vital to you scoring any free kicks. Timed finishing can also be utilised while taking free-kicks.

The same aiming system is used for penalties as free-kicks and how you aim will affect the elevation of the shot, whereas, the power will determine how accurate the shot is. Low power will cause the shot to be finessed and accurate. HIgh power will result in a strong shot but it may not be as accurate. However, spin can not be applied to penalties.

Passing

In recent FIFA games, there have been different types of passing that were overpowered. This year instead of relying on one form of passing you should become familiar with them all and use them in the most suitable situations. If your player is running in behind then a lobbed pass or regular through ball would be suitable. If the player you’re passing to is stood still then a standard pass would be most suited. And if a player you want to pass to is a fair distance away then a driven pass by holding R1/RB would be most suitable.

A few new types of passing have also been added to FIFA 20. An option you have is to double-tap X/A or triangle/Y and this will cause the ball to be dinked over the defender's leg if they are coming in for a tackle. Another new pass is if you hold L1/LB while double-tapping triangle, this will result in a driven version of the lobbed through ball.

Skill Moves

Just like every other year, this year FIFA has implemented new skill new moves. A stand out move that was added is the lateral heel to heel. This move allows the player to carry out a quick change of direction that is very similar to the well known Ronaldo chop. This can be carried out by holding L1/LB and flicking the right analogue stick to one side and then back to the other side.

A four-star variation of the roulette called the flair roulette has also been added and this can be performed by holding L1/LB and rotating the right stick 180 degrees, only instead of rotating backward, you rotate forward.

New features can be difficult to get your head around and master but if you put in the time and practice you will get the hang of them and will be taking advantage of them to help you win as much as you can.
