A US Senator has claimed that comparing FIFA to the Mafia is insulting to the mafia. Connecticut senator Richard Blumenthal - who has previously taken on tobacco companies, pollution, Microsoft and Craigslist - has now turned his attention on FIFA, as the Americans continue to take control.
Speaking to a senate subcommitee, Blumenthal made the remarks:
The fact of the matter is that what has been revealed so far is a mafia-style crime syndicate in charge of this sport.
The only hesitation in using that term is that it is almost insulting to the mafia because mafia would never have been so blatant, overt and arrogant in its corruption.
The Americans have lead the FIFA investigation that has exposed the vast extent of the corruption within the global organisation, that lead to the arrest of several senior FIFA officials and the resignation of president Sepp Blatter.
