Canover Watson, a member of FIFA's financial watchdog, has been arrested on suspicion of corruption and money laundering.
A businessman from the Cayman islands, Watson (43) is also vice-president of the Caribbean Football Union. He denies the allegations.
He is one of eight members of FIFA's audit and compliance committee, who are charged with ensuring the "completeness and reliability" of FIFA finances.
He was arrested by anti-corruption officers of the Royal Cayman Islands Police after an investigation into a 2010 contract to supply public hospitals with swipe card billing technology.
According to a police statement, Watson was arrested on "suspicion of breach of trust contrary to section 13 of the Cayman Islands Anti-Corruption Law, as well as abuse of public office... and conflict of interest", as well as "suspicion of money laundering contrary to section 133 of the Proceeds of Crime Law".
He was released on bail and is expected back in court on September 29. Watson vehemently denies the allegations. FIFA have declined to comment, but have asked Watson to explain his arrest.
