The MLS is set to kick off for the 2017 season this weekend and that will see two new franchises, sorry, clubs, introduced to the league in Minnesota United and Atlanta United.
Although there are 22 teams now competing in the MLS, 11 in each conference, expansion is set to continue with Miami FC and LA FC expecting to take part soon, but there is also room for other cities to get in on the act and one of the most hopeful is San Diego.
Having lost the Chargers to Los Angeles at the end of the NFL season, the city is trying to secure another major league team, and Landon Donovan is part of a fan-backed project called SoccerCity San Diego, that is aiming to orchestrate the city's push for an MLS place.
But first they'll need a team, and they have decided to leave that decision up to the fans via a fan vote. On their Facebook page, SoccerCity SD gathered all of the suggestions, yes all of them, and put them to a public vote. There are some absolutely hilarious options including two 'Anchorman' references in 'San Diego Burgundy' and 'San Diego Classy' that we really hope win.
Here are all the options:
Yes, you read that correctly, if the fans say so, San Diego's team could be called 'Footy McFooty Face'...
Thankfully the supporters, who actually do care about the future of soccer in their city, have voted much more sensibly thus far as at the time of writing 'San Diego FC' is leading the vote:
Time will tell whether an 'Anchorman' reference will catch up, but it looks as though the rather safe SDFC will be the pick to pitch the city to the MLS, after plans for a new stadium were revealed last month.
