Wayne Rooney has a well-known fondness for boxing.
It seems that Rooney did not merely restrict his boxing activities to his kitchen, however.
An interview with former Manchester United fitness coach Mick Clegg has revealed that Rooney used boxing exercises to prove his power in the United dressing room:
Wayne had one hell of a punch, which I know all too much about. As part of the warm-ups, we had twenty odd bikes and most of the lads would get up on a bike.
He [Wayne] would love getting on the pads with me in front of everyone as if to say "I'm the man". He was a very powerful lad.
Marvellously, the interviewer then asked who would win in a fight, Rooney or Roy Keane?
Oh I think Roy, [owing to] the way he picked up things - technically - whereas Wayne is more of a brawler.
Keane had a good pedigree in amateur boxing before sticking to football.
Clegg also revealed that he forced Alex Ferguson into taking physical exercise to relieve some of the stress brought upon him by the United job. Ferguson was also a boxing fan, although Clegg suspects that Ferguson simply loved the opportunity of putting on gloves and having the opportunity to throw a few punches.
Clegg disclosed a quite amusing story regarding Gary Neville learning the guitar. Neville began learning the guitar as a youth team player, only to see his instructor double the price of the lessons as soon as Neville broke into the first team.
