Former Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook has been named as Portsmouth's new manager. Cook had led Chesterfield to the League 1 play-offs this season but after a 3-0 defeat to Preston this weekend Cook has decided to move on.
The fact that he has dropped down to League 2 is something of a surprise though. Portsmouth may be a relatively big name in English football but their slide down the leagues has been remarkable. They managed to halt the slide last year but a 16th place finish in League 2 this season means Cook certainly hasn't chosen an easy job.
However, with the club now debt free and in the control of the supporters, Cook obviously thinks there is scope for serious improvement in a club who won the FA Cup as recently as 2008.
