Manchester United's derby hammering last night moved one of their most dogged defenders, Paddy Crerand, to admit that they have been roundly bettered all season by their closest rivals.
1968 European Cup winner Crerand, known for his irritability and his hardline pro-United stance, often regardless of basic fact or common knowledge, was stumped as to how his beloved Red Devils can pick themselves back up next season. "You couldn't argue with the result, they were far superior all night - far superior all season," he said, speaking after the game where he was a co-commentator for MUTV. "What we have to do next year is compete with them. How you do it, God only knows."
"City deserved the victory, you couldn't have got off to a better start than that. I have to go and face friends of mine who are City fans."
Commentator Stuart Gardner mentioned that the defeat was United's tenth in the league this season, and their sixth at Old Trafford. Asked for his thoughts on the difference between their home and away form, Crerand replied: "It's amazing how confident and how well we've done (away) and how poor we've been at home. You can't complain about tonight, they were far superior to us, Manchester City."
