Evan Ferguson really exploded onto the scene two years ago, and last season he started the campaign on fire, really justifying the hype surrounding him.

A hat-trick against Newcastle in particular really stood out, and suddenly there were big money moves being lined up for the Meath man.

However, Ferguson's form in front of goal dipped, and he now has a goal drought that stretches right back until November last year.

A serious ankle injury put his season to an end last March, and the hope was that a summer of rehabilitation and recovery would see the young striker return in time for the 2024/25 Premier League season.

However it appears that the comeback has hit a slight setback and he won't be ready for this weekend's opener against Everton, but they are hopeful that the Bettystown native will be ready for the following week.

"There are quite a few players who came back this week. I can’t say if they’re already ready for the first game at Everton," said Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler.

"Pervis Estupinan is back on the pitch, Tariq Lamptey is back on the pitch, Ferguson will be too.

"So it’s great news, but I’m not sure if they’re ready for the first match."

Interestingly the second game in Brighton's schedule will be against Manchester United, a club that has recently expressed an interest in signing the Irish youngster.

According to the Daily Star United are considering a £50million move for Ferguson before the end of the transfer window.

The Red Devil's have shown interest in signing the Brighton star in the past, and the speculation linking him to Old Trafford never seems to go away.

The potential move would be in line with United's current transfer strategy of going after young promising players with big futures, rather than forking over big sums of money for stars in the twighlight of their careers.

First thing is first though, Ferguson needs to get himself ready to be on the pitch for that fixture in two weeks, but there is a slight chance that he could be United's dug out, rather than the Brighton one.
