The complex 24-team format means there are plenty of permutations at play as we enter the final day of the UEFA Euro 2024 group stage.

After the 36 group games have been played, only eight teams will be heading home, with the group winners, runners-up and four of the third-placed teams progressing to the last 16.

The third-placed teams who progress are the four with the highest points, with the final knockout places still to play for as Group F concludes on Wednesday evening.

Ahead of those two games, we've broken down everything that's at stake, and all the key Euro 2024 permutations - from who is likely to progress as a third-placed team, to who will likely face who in the last 16.

Euro 2024 Group F

Position Team Pld W D L GD GS GA Points
1 Portugal (Q) 2 2 0 0 +4 5 1 6
2 Turkey 2 1 0 1 -1 3 4 3
3 Czechia 2 0 1 1 -1 2 3 1
4 Georgia 2 0 1 1 -2 2 4 1

Wednesday's games:

8pm: Czechia v Turkey (Hamburg)

8pm: Georgia v Portugal (Gelsenkirchen)

Portugal are already assured to go through to the last 16 as group winners, and they face Georgia on the final day of the group stage.

Turkey know that they need only avoid defeat to ensure they go through as runners-up, but a win for Czechia would, in effect, guarantee them second place instead.

The only way Georgia can finish second is if both they and Czechia win, with Georgia also needing a swing in goal difference or goals scored.

If neither Czechia or Georgia win, they will both be eliminated from the race for a third-placed slot.

How the third-placed teams are stacking up

Position Team (Group) Pld W D L GD GS GA Points
1 Netherlands (D) 3 1 1 1 0 4 4 4
2 Slovakia (E) 3 1 1 1 0 3 3 4
3 Slovenia (C) 3 0 3 0 0 2 2 3
4 Hungary (A) 3 1 0 2 -3 2 5 3
5 Croatia (B) 3 0 2 1 -3 3 6 2
6 Czechia (F) 2 0 1 1 -1 2 3 1

One thing is for certain and that is that Croatia's slim hopes of qualifying as a third-placed team were officially ended by Tuesday night's action. The Netherlands are now assured to go through, as are Slovenia and Slovakia, meaning there are now only two possible outcomes of the third-place battle.

The two possible outcomes will define which teams play who in the last sixteen. Four groups will have their winners play a third-placed team in the last 16. We've broken down the remaining possibilities below - bear with us, as it is all a bit complex.

If the third-placed teams come from groups A, C, D, and E

Spain v Slovakia

England v Netherlands

Romania v Slovenia

Portugal v Hungary

If the third-placed teams come from groups C, D, E, and F

Spain v 3rd place in Group F

England v Slovakia

Romania v Netherlands

Portugal v Slovenia
