Erik ten Hag is set to be appointed as the next Manchester United manager, with a deal with the Ajax boss believed to have been wrapped up in recent days.
The 52-year old's appointment could be confirmed as soon as after Sunday's Dutch Cup final, with focus set to quickly shift towards strengthening the squad at his new club in the months ahead.
United are certainly in need of a major overhaul, with too many members of the current team performing well below the required standard. Shipping out some of the deadwood at Old Trafford will be supplemented with a few new arrivals, with the Dutchman likely to have already suggested a number of players he would be interested in bringing on board.
Apparently, that could include one already in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag credited with Steven Bergwijn interest
Mail Sport are reporting that Erik ten Hag in interested in bringing Spurs forward Steven Bergwijn to Manchester United, having failed to lure him to Amsterdam in January.
Ajax came close to signing the 24-year old on loan during the winter transfer window, only for Antonio Conte to pull the plug on the deal at the last minute. However, the winger has only started one game for the club since after the subsequent arrival of Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus.
Bergwijn was signed from PSV Endhoven in January of 2020 for a fee of around £26million, but has failed to impress in North London. It is likely they would be willing to move on from him this summer, with an asking price of roughly £20million likely.
Whether he would be an upgrade on United's current options is debatable, although ten Hag would know him well from his time in the Eredivisie. The club are likely to be in the market for a winger, a centre forward, and a central midfielder in the off-season.
That will only be the start of what is likely to be a major rebuilding project.
