The decision to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United last summer excited many of the club's supporters. Having finished second the previous season and signed Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho earlier in the summer, there was a hope that those moves could help the club compete for the title for the first time in the post-Fergsuon era.
Of course, the reality was far different.
Manchester United would have a torrid season, with Ole Gunner Solskjaer losing his job a few months into the campaign. They would ultimately end up with their lowest point total in the Premier League era as they limped to a sixth-placed finish.
Ronaldo was the club's top scorer, but there was also a sense that his presence in the team ended up making a negative impact. He did not work off the ball and the side looked rather dysfunctional as a result.
The Portuguese star would go on to make a transfer request this summer.
Erik ten Hag shoots down Jamie Carragher's Ronaldo suggestion
Manchester United have insisted that they want to keep Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, something that has been confirmed by Erik ten Hag once again.
Speaking on Sky Sports to Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in the buildup to the game against Liverpool, he brushed off Carragher's suggestions that he could make a statement by moving on his big name striker.
Carragher: Other managers have come to the Premier League... and they've all made a big decision or statement when they first come to the club. I feel that Manchester United should get rid of Cristiano Ronaldo. As a manager, could it not be a statement for you as a manager to say 'okay, the club have to move him on' if he doesn't want to be here?
Ten Hag: That's not what he's telling us. We plan with him and that has reasons. He scores goals, that is one of the most important factors in football, it's clear.
We want him to be here. It's also not that we can easily appoint three or four top strikers, because they are not available.
We are happy with him. Now we have to fit him in our system and our way of playing. That is what he is trying and what we are trying.
Cristiano Ronaldo blanks Jamie Carragher
Jamie Carragher has been very critical of Cristiano Ronaldo over the last year. He said at the time that he would not be a good signing for Manchester United, an opinion that has proven to be justified.
This summer, he has been steadfast in his belief that the club should move him on as soon as possible.
While you might have guessed that Ronaldo would care little about opinions from pundits, that does not seem to be the case.
On Sky Sports tonight, he made his way over to say hello to former teammates Gary Neville and Roy Keane during the live broadcast. When Carragher attempted to greet him, he was completely blanked.
Carra 🗣 "Totally blanked!"
Dave 🗣 "Just like most people do." @Carra23 gets blanked by Ronaldo and @DavidJonesSky kicks him whilst he's down 😭 pic.twitter.com/b2tGH1vHhx— Football Daily (@footballdaily) August 22, 2022
Clearly, he has seen the opinions from the former Liverpool man over the last 12 months.
Jamie Carragher won't be expecting a Christmas card from him any time soon.
