Andy Townsend may have commentated on his last football match for ITV yesterday. The former Ireland midfielder's contract is up at 'the end of the season' and many assumed that would be the Champions League final on Saturday.
However, Townsend was back for yesterday's Ireland vs England clash at the Aviva as something of a send-off and to be fair to him he was in a very difficult position. For one he was forced to commentate on a game that was entirely devoid of any form of entertainment, and secondly there was the Irish/English problem.
Born in England, played for Ireland and commentating for an English TV channel, it was tough going and Townsend seemed caught in the middle at times. Granted, there was some small encouragement for Ireland but for the most part Townsend was as neutral as possible.
Some England fans really didn't see it like that.
Just fuck off Andy Townsend you plastic twat

Is Andy Townsend an England fan or an Ireland fan? Sounds very much an England fan until they play Ireland. "We did well against England" ??

When Andy Townsend likes to remind everyone at home he was too shit to play for England so he played for Ireland by saying 'Wee bit'

Imagine being Andy Townsend, of Ireland 'fame', and criticising the future England top scorer of ALL TIME.
He must have been some player.— Ben Slater (@b_e_SLATEr) June 7, 2015
@itvfootball perhaps you should tell Townsend to keep his biased views to himself he clearly should be commentating on Irish tv for ireland

Andy Townsend, from Kent, supporting Ireland v England live on English television. Typical of ITV's consistently useless football coverage.

Andy Townsend you're on ITV not RTE... We don't want to hear your ideas on what Ireland should be doing.

It was nice of ITV to give him such an easy game as a send-off.
