It has been long suspected that Real Madrid, in their perpetual search for the world's most well-known players, would make moves on one of two stars currently plying their trade in the French Ligue 1. Between Neymar Jr and Kylian Mbappe, the Paris St. Germain men seemed a natural fit for the Spanish giants. Yet, contrary reports are suggesting it is Edinson Cavani who may find himself leaving Paris for Madrid.
With the unexpected departure of Cristiano Ronaldo hastening Real's need to attract a suitably sizable replacement, both Neymar and Mbappe would have appeared more suitable targets.
Yet, with their differing experiences at the World Cup - Mbappe flourishing while Neymar toiled - it is seemingly the man who falls in the middle that may be the most desirable, and, crucially, attainable.
According to the Spanish publication AS, Real Madrid are considering Cavani as a candidate who may reasonably match - or come close to - Ronaldo's reliable goal-scoring record. Paris St. Germain's record goalscorer, the Uruguayan has hit some 89 goals in his last two seasons with the French champions.
Although he has often criticised for his lacklustre finishing, Cavani enjoyed a relatively successful World Cup campaign in Russia; his two goals against Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal enough to bring the South Americans to the quarter-final of the tournament.
Having joined Paris St. Germain from Napoli in 2013 for a fee believed to be in the range of €64 million, AS are confident that Edinson Cavani would be receptive to the move.
However, the 31-year-old is believed to enjoy a friendly relationship with his current employers, and it is believed he would not be so determined for a move as to jeopardise this with any stand-off.
