Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has refused to give an update on striker Edinson Cavani ahead of his team's World Cup quarter final against France tomorrow.
The PSG forward suffered a calf injury in his side's round of 16 win over Portugal, the 31-year-old limping off after helping himself to two goals.
In his pre-match press conference Tabarez was in no mood to provide any information as to whether the forward would be fit in time to face France on Friday:
We issued a press release explaining exactly what kind of exams he had to go through and nobody respected it. People started asking other professionals, people who are not here and don’t know what is going on.
I’m not going to say anything else about Cavani because I have already given enough information and I don’t want to get into games that are convenient for certain journalists who have a style I don’t share.
Tabarez argued that he would not divulge the extent of his player's injury as it would give his opponents an unfair advantage over his team:
In less than 24 hours you will know who will play and who will be on the bench. I’m not going to change my mind. We don’t want to create any doubts or rumours.
I apologise, I am not telling you that information. I cannot give you all of my information as I do not get all the information from the French team.
Doctors from the Uruguay national team released a statement on Monday saying that the striker had swelling on his calf, but no muscle tear. The Paris St Germain player trained separately from his team-mates on Thursday ahead of Friday's 3pm kick-off.
