A number of young Irish players have made their debut in the Premier League this season, with Galway native Alex Murphy part of a talented crop of youngsters currently making their way in the English top flight.
Murphy first came through at local club Galway United, spending two seasons in their first team squad before making the move to Newcastle United in 2022.
He would go on to make his Premier League debut this season, coming off the bench during a win over Chelsea back in November. The defender would also come on during a victory against Sheffield United last month.
Now, Newcastle have rewarded him with a new contract.

Eddie Howe praises Galway youngster after Newcastle deal
Alex Murphy put pen to paper on a new contract with Newcastle United earlier today, with the player now tied to a 'long-term' deal.
Speaking to the club's official website, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe summed up why his team were so keen to get the Irishman to commit his future to the side.
I’m really pleased to see Alex sign a new long-term contract here. It’s well deserved recognition for the work he’s put in over the course of the season.
He had a great pre-season in America and has gone from strength to strength since, earning himself a Premier League debut and a regular place in our matchday squads.
We rate Alex highly - he applies himself brilliantly every day and he knows if he continues working hard that further opportunities will come his way.
Alex Murphy recently graduated into the Ireland U21 squad, being called up for the Euro qualifier against San Marino back in March. He will be hoping to feature for the side over the remainder of the qualifying campaign.
The player admitted he was thrilled to put pen to paper on this deal, committing his future to Newcastle in the process.
I’m absolutely delighted to sign a new deal here and secure my future with the club.
I’ve loved every minute since I first signed nearly two years ago. I’ve been fortunate to work with some brilliant players and coaches - with both the Academy and the first team - and I’m really grateful for the opportunities that have come my way.
It’s an exciting time to be a young player at this club - we can all see there is a pathway from the number of players who have made their first-team debuts this season. I just need to keep working hard and hopefully I can build on the progress I’ve made so far.
While a first team breakthrough will be difficult next season, there is no doubt that Alex Murphy is a big talent.
The Galway youngster is one to keep an eye on.
