Guile, there was very little of it on the Stade de France pitch last night - bar an ounce from Antoine Griezmann - bemoaned the RTÉ panel. This tournament left the trio concerned about the path on which football is headed.

Eamon Dunphy worried that the future of football is becoming 'more Pogba than Griezmann', more power over thought.

Paul Pogba is not a £100 million player surmised Dunphy. He failed to produce what you would expect of a footballer commanding such a fee - Giles agreed.

Apart from Ronaldo, who scored important goals for Portugal during this tournament, Pepe has been their most vital player. Last night, he was named Man of the Match.

Dunphy acknowledged Pepe's hero status for Portugal, though - cutting to the chase regarding the dearth of great players in the game right now - concluded that no young football fan went to bed last night after having emulated the ultimate master of bastardry in the back garden.

Pepe was arguably the hero of the Championship for Portugal. No kid is going to sleep tonight dreaming of being Pepe.

They go to sleep at night dreaming about Messi, Ronaldo - the great players that excite us and really are dream-like. There are still some of them in the game.
