In the run to Euro 2016, such was good form of Damien Delaney - and the averageness of Ireland's centre-back options - there were suggestions that the 34-year-old could be rescued from the international wilderness.

Of course, it didn't happen.

After Ciaran Clark's performance against Belgium on Saturday, plenty of time has been given to analysing who Martin O'Neill will select to partner John O'Shea on Wednesday night.

Ahead of RTÉ's coverage of Wales vs Russia on Monday evening, Eamon Dunphy was still banging the bodhrán for O'Neill to select someone other than Clark.
