When Balls woke up this morning, looking to pass pithy comment on those more successful and talented than us, U2 revealing they are inspired by Eamon Dunphy is a pretty rich lode from which to derive wry, ironic comment: Irish relics struggling for relevance etc, etc.
But then again, both are supremely relevant in the sense that we can't stop talking about them: U2 are touring the States with the Joshua Tree before returning to sold-out shows at Croke Park, while Leo Messi cannot score an important goal for Barcelona without Irish twitter using it to prove, once again, how Eamon called it badly. Given that Dunphy is a man flirting with calling his next autobiography Wrong About Everything, we doubt he is overly-arsed.
And now, these two spheres collide.
In The Irish Times today, Brian Boyd reports from U2's gig in Seattle, which carries quotes from Bono and The Edge. While kindly inviting Trump voters to their shows (with the exception of Trump, who is not welcome), excusing his meeting with Mike Pence, and lamenting the "hostile takeover" of the the Republican Party by Trump, Bono revealed their new single has been inspired by a meeting with Eamon Dunphy in a Dublin pub.
Here's the relevant line:
Eamon said this beautiful thing about me once in a bar in Dublin - he said “Bono, Ali is the best thing about you,” referring to Bono’s wife Ali Hewson.
“So the song is called ‘You’re The Best Thing About Me’.
U2 derive their name from the U.S. spy planes used to keep tabs on Russia during the Cold War, so it is a bit surprising that their latest inspiration is a man seemingly dedicated to calling things in contradiction to what he and everybody else is watching.
That's Achtung, Baby!
