The Eamon Dunphy podcast, entitled 'The Stand', which launches on December 5th with a live event at Vicar Street in Dublin, will feature some old friends.
Since John Giles was let go by RTE, we've been forced to go to Youtube and watch and re-watch old clips of himself and Dunphy going at it, more often than not mediated by Bill and watched regally by Liam Brady.
'Giles, Dunphy and Brady' was something you looked forward to almost as much as the match itself. Dunphy's proclamations on the state of the game in Ireland or elsewhere as well as his critique of world-class players (calling Ronaldo a "puffball" and Sergio Ramos "Paul McShane on steroids") would often contrast with the calm way in which Giles would simplify a game. Brady would then chip in with some sobering realism.
Then Didi Hamann arrived and made things even better. His punditry since 2010 has been at time hilarious and always entertaining, including this famous declaration:
All of this is why we're simply tickled pink to hear that Giles, Hamann and Brady will be taking part in the Eamon Dunphy podcast every week.
Dunphy had been fairly coy about it when promoting the podcast, saying that the trio would be taking part in that live event in December, but in an interview with Kieran Cunningham in the 'Irish Daily Star' today Gilesy has said that he, Hamann and Brady will be having a fuller role in the venture, which will have two episodes a week.
Giles told Cunningham he was looking forward to it:
It was Eamon's idea. I didn't know much about podcasts but Eamon managed to explain it to me.
Now that I'm older, I do see people that retired and it didn't do them any good.
I just want to keep my mind active, I think it's important to do that. This is something new and exciting.
We can't wait.
Make sure to pick up the 'Star' and read the full interview between Giles and Kieran Cunningham.
