Former Irish international and Dundalk legend, Tommy McConville has died at the age of 67.
McConville was one of the greatest ever Dundalk players. He played for the Oriel Park outfit for a combined total of 17 seasons out of his 23 year career. He also played for spells at Waterford United, Shamrock Rovers, and the Washington Democrats in the States.
The stylish defender played six times for the Republic of Ireland between 1971 and 73. He won the prestigious Soccer Writers Personality award in 1982.
He won three League titles with Dundalk in 1976, 79 and 82. He also won a League title (his first) during his one season spell at Waterford United in 1973. He also won 3 FAI Cups with Dundalk.
Colm Murphy has written this excellent tribute to the man himself for the Dundalk FC website.
Tributes have been paid to him by Noel King and John Delaney
John Delaney: "It is a very sad day for Irish football. The thoughts of the FAI are with Tommy's family and friends at this time."
