Dirk Kuyt Kills Hopes Of The Greatest Transfer In Football History

He's the nicest man in football, so really it's no surprise that Dirk Kuyt does things the way they should be done. After becoming the cult hero of all cult heroes at Anfield, he tore it up in Turkey for a while before returning home to Feyenoord and showing the football world he's still got it with ten goals in ten Eredivisie games so far this season.

Even at 35, that kind of form does not go unnoticed and when reports in Spain started to link the Dirk with a January move to Barcelona, we got very excited. According to Sport, Barca are looking for a Henrik Larsson-esque signing to come in and share some of the goalscoring burden at the latter end of their career.

In that regard, Kuyt would be ideal. However, speaking ahead of the Feyenoord-Ajax clash this weekend, Kuyt moved to reassure the Rotterdam fans that he was going nowhere.

Should the Feyenoord fans be concerned because I might go to Barca? No. I’ve started something beautiful (at Feyenoord) and I want to finish it.

Feyenoord currently sit three points behind Ajax after yesterday's 1-1 draw and you can certainly understand Kuyt's desire to stick around to try and help his club to a first title since 1999. His family's reaction when they found out they were returning home may also have something to do with it.

We certainly can't blame him for sticking around but still, it would have been great to see Kuyt getting the move to Barca and showing everyone everywhere that hard work really can get you to the top.
