In a challenge that did appear to be fairly innocuous, Diego Godin was left writhing in agony on the deck as Luis Suarez, seemingly inadvertently, caught him with an elbow.
The full 90 minutes between Atletico and Barca were played out right on the edge of boiling point on Wednesday night, and it spilled over on a number of occasions, but despite the insistence of the Atletico players, it looks as though this Suarez incident was not deliberate.
Godin is Suarez's international teammate at Uruguay, but he did not let their friendship get in the way of making it very clear that he was caught just above the eye and had quickly developed a nasty looking shiner.
Ouch.
Again, it appeared unintentional, and sure enough the incident went unpunished despite Godin's very convincing evidence that something had occurred.
He'll be seeing out of one eye when he wakes up in the morning, but he won't mind one bit as Atleti held on to book their place in the Champions League semi-finals.
