Euro 2024 has come and gone and it is safe to say that Cristiano Ronaldo - the biggest name in the tournament - failed to make an impression.

Now 39, Ronaldo plays his club football in Saudi Arabia and it showed as he failed to make an impact and ultimately proved to be a prominent factor in Portugal's premature exit against France.

Portugal have no shortage of alternatives to the veteran, excelling after dropping him at the 2022 FIFA World Cup but he would ultimately play a more minutes than any of his teammates two years on.

Roberto Martinez's faith in the European football icon was questionable, although there is no doubting Ronaldo's presence and stature.

He has drawn much criticism throughout the competition and Didi Hamann has been one of the most prominent voices.

Ronaldo's most memorable moment came when he burst into tears mid-game after missing a penalty against Slovenia, which Hamann labelled 'utterly embarrassing'.

He also rubbished Stephen Kelly's claim that Ronaldo get in to most of the other team's in the tournament, but his latest takedown is his most damning.

Didi Hamann urges kids not to be like 'pathetic' Ronaldo

While the RTE panel were picking out their moments of the tournament, Hamann was keen to highlight how Ronaldo conducted himself following his side's exit on penalties against France.

Youngster Joao Felix missed the deciding penalty and Ronaldo did not go over to console him before walking down the tunnel.

Detailing that moment and the fact Ronaldo played so many minutes despite his physical limitations, Hamann claimed it was 'one of the most outrageous acts of selfishness' he had ever seen.

"Everyone went over to Joao Felix but he didn't bother - he went down the tunnel," Hamann said.

"I think Felix needed an arm around the shoulder from his captain but he instead went down the tunnel.

"I just don't understand how - he has been playing the game for 22 years - he doesn't understand the team dynamics.

"I think the way he behaved the whole competition - playing the last game against Georgia when they had already won the group and playing the most minutes out of all the outfield players when he wasn't up to it anymore - was one of the most outrageous acts of selfishness I have ever seen in a team game.

"He has got hundreds of millions of followers and a lot of kids look up to him. I just want to say to these kids, that if you behave like this in society, work or in a team game then you won't succeed. You will get problems.

"It shows he played an individual game in a team sport for the last 20 years. That shows how good he is but he could only do it because he was the best.

"He is going down as one of the all-time greats but when I look at his behaviour throughout the tournament I think he has let his team down.

"It was nothing short of pathetic."

Scathing stuff from the German and a take which Richie Sadlier was quick to challenge, as you can see in the clip below.
