Manchester United smashed the british transfer record with their £59 million purchase of Angel Di Maria in August. This sparked criticism of Van Gaal and Woodward's purchasing, as it was deemed by many that they didn't require Di Maria.

It has now been claimed by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi that Di Maria wanted to join the French giants before signing on at Old Trafford, but that they couldn't agree a fee with Real Madrid.

Di Maria previously denied any sort of suggestion, claiming that United were the 'only club for him'.

There were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for.

Al-Khelaifi, in stark contrast to Di Maria's quotes, has suggested that his club were the ideal club for him.

For two or three weeks I discussed this issue with my friend Florentino Perez, the president of Real Madrid.

We met twice, we made an offer, but we did not agree on the price. For me it was too expensive. It has nothing to do with Financial Fair Play. The player wanted to come to Paris, but this was not possible.

PSG  were fined by UEFA in May for breaching the Financial Fair Play rules. Al-Khelaifi seems to think the FFP rules aren't fair. Then again, neither is £50 million for David Luiz.
