Dean Henderson has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United, which will keep him at the club until June 2025, with the option to extend for a further year.

Henderson, who has been named in England's squad for their upcoming internationals, is a product of United’s Academy and has been at the club since the age of 14.

After going out on loan to Sheffield United, the 'keeper kept 13 clean sheets in the Premier League last season, the joint-third highest in the division.

Henderson was also nominated for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.

Speaking about his new deal, Henderson said:

“The pathway that I have been on for the past five years has been fantastic for my development and the invaluable loan period at Sheffield United has been part of that.

“The goalkeeping department at United is excellent; there are three top-level goalkeepers who have achieved so much in the game and I look forward to working with the group. The faith that the manager and the club have shown in me with this contract means a lot to me and will continue my progression as a goalkeeper.

“I’ll be giving everything to improve every day so that I can play as many games as possible for this great club. Now I am looking forward to joining up with the England squad and then preparing for the season ahead.”

The news can be seen as an indication of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's summer plans because prior to United's Europa League quarter-final against Copenhagen, the United manager was candid about the futures of his three 'keepers - David De Gea, Sergio Romero, and Henderson - and hinted that he might have to let one of them go.

“It’ll be difficult to keep three of them, so we’ll see what the decision will be there. I must be the most privileged manager in the world with our goalkeeping department.  Sergio, David and, with Dean Henderson coming back, there are three top keepers," said Solskjaer.

De Gea had a rocky end of the season at Old Trafford, having been at fault for a few goals, notably in United's FA Cup tie against Chelsea, but it's highly unlikely that he'll be sold.

However, Sergio Romero's future at the club is less certain with Chelsea and Leeds linked with the Argentinian.

Speaking about Henderson's new contract, Solskjaer said:

“We are delighted that Dean has signed his new contract. He had another great season at Sheffield United, where he gained a lot of experience and grew both as a player and a person.

“Dean is a fantastic young keeper with the attitude and work-rate to keep improving every day. We are in a strong position within the goalkeeping department and that gives us the competition for places that we are looking for in the squad.

"Dean is another great example of the type of player who has come through the Academy and truly understands what it means to be at Manchester United. We are all looking forward to working with Dean and continuing to develop his talent.”
