It was a losing start for David Moyes on Wednesday night, as his second spell in charge of Everton got off to a stuttering start against Aston Villa.

The beloved ex-Toffees manager returned to the Goodison Park dugout after the sacking of Sean Dyche, taking over duties from interim duo Séamus Coleman and Leighton Baines.

He was given a warm reception by the Everton faithful on Wednesday, but Ollie Watkins' second-half goal put a dampener on affairs and secured a 1-0 win for the visitors.

Though Villa were victorious on the night, Everton were not without chances to claw their way back into the game.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed three massive opportunities - two of which came with the scores still poised at 0-0 - and the sides' xG and shot stats were roughly equal across the 90 minutes.

Goals have been hard to come by for Everton of late, with a damning statistic on Monday Night Football last week revealing that they have scored just 26 goals from open play since the start of last season.

Only bottom side Southampton have fewer goals than Everton this season, and it will be the most urgent problem Moyes will need to solve. It is also a problem that the Everton boss admitted already has him feeling 'burnt out.'

Scale of Everton task not lost on David Moyes

Hearing that your new manager is 'burnt out' less than a week into the job is never ideal but the reality of the situation at Everton is not lost on David Moyes.

Speaking to the media after Wednesday night's defeat to Aston Villa, he said that the hunt for answers to the side's goalscoring woes already had him tearing his hair out.

I thought the crowd were great and I was really thankful for my reception but I am keeping my head down because I don't want to be at a team near the bottom of the league and I have lost.

At the moment I have to find a way for the team to get a result. I've only been here a couple of days and I'm nearly burnt out looking at how we can score more goals and how we can get players who can do that. With the squad we have, everybody is saying, 'How are you going to find that?'

If we get someone different that's OK but we have to find ways within the squad, we have to make goals, score goals and improve our attacking play.

They are not there trying not to play well. Maybe they are just needing someone to give them a lift and a little bit of quality to make the difference and we are just lacking that at the moment.

There are no easy solutions in sight, with Everton struggling with financial issues and the forwards currently on their roster struggling with their shooting boots.

It is a problem Moyes will have to solve quickly if Everton are to survive the dreaded drop to the Championship. The Toffees currently sit one point above the relegation zone, with just three wins thus far this season.

Their next assignment sees the visit of Tottenham to Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon, with kick-off at 2pm.
