It was a sophorific experience watching Ireland play Wales tonight, so much so it was almost a relief when a Harry Wilson free kick broke the deadlock in the 58th minute.

It was a game devoid of any real quality until Wilson stepped up to curl the ball into Randolph's net, though the Middlesbrough keeper will feel upon reflection he should be doing better.

Harry Arter was the man who committed the foul just outside the Ireland box and Wilson, much like his strike against Man United in the league cup, sent the ball the other side of the wall. The only difference is that had Randolph been anticipating it, he would have surely had a simple save to make.

The opinion that the 31-year-old was at fault was one shared by many online, with Wilson's shot not even that far into the corner:
